Red Box helps firms to meet new fire extinguisher maintenance and commissioning standard

Fire extinguisher maintenanceCompanies risk jeopardising lives and property if they cut corners on fire extinguisher maintenance and commissioning in the recession, warn safety experts at Red Box Fire Control.

A newly revised British Standard 5306-3 places extra emphasis on the correct installation and commissioning of fire extinguishers.

It directly affects companies that try to cut costs by purchasing extinguishers by mail order without the necessary expert help to commission and install them.

Some companies have unwittingly made mistakes with potentially lethal consequences - such as placing water extinguishers next to high voltage electrical equipment.

High pressure CO2 fire extinguishers can also be highly dangerous if not set up correctly.
Without the correct diffuser horns fitted, CO2 extinguishers discharge at such high pressure that they can fly across rooms like missiles, causing serious injury.

There are also fears that other companies may fall victim to unscrupulous fire safety firms that either over-supply the number of extinguishers required or do not carry out the necessary fire extinguisher maintenance correctly.

Some unapproved engineers tick the boxes on the fire extinguishers' safety labels without actually doing the maintenance work.

Several victims of these companies have turned to Red Box Fire Control to correct shoddy fire safety work carried out by unapproved engineers from other firms.

Red Box is an ISO9001:2008 quality assured company and a member of the Fire Industry Association and the Fire Protection Association.

Red Box proprietor Clive Webb said: "You need to use a fire safety company that explains what it is going to do before it carries out the work.

"You should always use a fire extinguisher maintenance company that is ISO9001:2008 quality assured and member of a recognised body such as the Fire Industry Association."
